Are You Considering Purchasing New Hay Equipment?
Expanding your hay business? Want to make your own hay? Need new hay equipment? Here’s a couple tips to make selecting your equipment an easy and seamless process:
- Know your tractor’s capabilities– Before you begin looking for new hay equipment, make sure you know the specifications of your tractor. The most important ones to remember are its horsepower and weight. With this information, most equipment dealers will be able to understand what your tractor is capable of pulling.
- Choosing the Right Hay Mower– This piece is what will be hooked to your 3-point hitch and get the hay process started for you! There are 3 different types of hay mowers: sickle bar, disc and drum. Each has Its advantages and disadvantages.
- Determining the Need for a Hay Tedder– A tedder spreads and turns over loose hay in the field. This action exposes the hay on the underside of a pile to air and sunlight, speeding up the drying process and prevents mold from growing. Although some can get by without a tedder, it is smart to have a machine that can do this important job if and when you need it.
- Choosing the Right Hay Rake– To bale hay, it must be raked into windrows. It is a common misconception that hay can be baled directly from the windrow or swath created by the hay mower. The choices for hay rakes are many. The four most prominent styles are wheel rakes, parallel bar rakes, rotary rakes and belt rakes.
- Hay Baling– When it comes to choosing a baler, there are many choices. Mini round balers and square balers are commonly used with compact tractors. It is important to remember the horsepower and pulling capability of your tractor when picking out a baler size. Equine Pasture Management
Proper pasture management leads to high quality and productive pastures that can supply excellent nutrition for horses. Here are a few tips to keep in mind for this summer:
- Feed Your Pasture– pastures are often left to fend for themselves. It is of good management practice to regularly test your soil levels to see what nutrients they may be missing. Apply fertilizer according to your soil test results to support healthy pastures and good nutrient content.
- Grooming– this is an essential management practice to stimulate new growth in your pastures. Once the grass reaches 3-4”, remove your horses and mow, drag and fertilize. This will help break up manure piles and aerate the soil. It will also help stimulate new grass growth for full and lush pastures.
- Plant Variety– it is important to know what’s growing in your pasture. Be sure to understand the roles of climate, forage species and growing seasons of your pastures. You can analyze this with a expert or on your own. If you have mostly cool-season species, they thrive in early spring and summer. If you have warm-season species, they thrive in mid to late summer.
- Resting– pastures also need rest and time-off to continue to be successful producers. Horses can be very hard on their pastures and often over-graze which leads to having just a dirt lot. Making sure to have a proper pasture rotation schedule is beneficial for both your horses and pastures in ensuring they have proper nutritional value and quality forage.

The higher the level of management, the more successful the pasture will be both in quality and quantity, creating the proper pasture atmosphere. Good management along with proper weather, should create an atmosphere for a thriving pasture.
