Lawn Mowing Tips
The timing of lawn mowing can significantly impact the health and appearance of your grass. Here are the key points to consider:
Best Time to Mow:
- Mid-Morning (Around 10:00 AM): This is generally the best time to mow during the summer months. By this time, the dew has evaporated, and the grass is growing actively without being exposed to excessive heat. Mowing during this window allows the lawn to recover and continue healthy growth.
Before or After Summer (Around 10:30 AM to 4:00 PM): In the cooler months before and after summer, it’s best to wait until around 10:30 AM to start mowing. You can continue mowing as late as 3:00 PM or 4:00 PM during these cooler periods.
Times to Avoid Mowing:
Wet Lawns: Mowing a wet lawn is not ideal because it can lead to several issues:
- Wet grass resists being drawn into the cutting blade.
- Wet clippings don’t bag well and tend to clump.
- Mower wheels can create deep ruts on slippery grass.
- Walking on slippery grass is unsafe.
Early Morning: Avoid mowing right after sunrise when dew is heaviest. Wait several hours for the dew to evaporate before starting.
Midday: Mowing during midday can stress the grass due to high temperatures.
Late Evening: While early evening (before dark settles) can be a good time to mow, finish on the earlier side as a courtesy to neighbors and to comply with noise abatement ordinances.
Seasonal Considerations:
- April to June: Mow at least once a week during these months and fertilize in May and June.
- July to September: Continue mowing once a week and fertilize.
- October: Mow the last one or two times before the grass stops growing.
- November to February: Do not mow during these months; keep snow and debris off the lawn.
Remember, a well-timed mow contributes to a healthier, more beautiful lawn.
Grazing Muzzles: A Weight Management Tool
Grazing muzzles are specialized devices designed to help horse owners regulate their horses’ grass intake while still allowing them to enjoy pasture turnout. Not all horses need them, but some are prone to weight gain due to efficient metabolism and the ability to store fat readily. These horses benefit from grazing muzzles, especially if they have conditions like Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) or Equine Cushing’s Disease (PPID). In the Spring, when grass becomes more abundant, easy-keeper horses can be more susceptible to sudden weight gain, leading to many other issues.
Grazing muzzles restrict forage intake while allowing horses to move freely in the pasture. By reducing grass consumption, muzzles help manage weight without completely limiting access to grass. The benefits include weight reduction (studies show up to 30% less grass consumption) and a decreased risk of laminitis. Proper fit and regular monitoring are essential when using grazing muzzles. Consult with your veterinarian to determine if a muzzle is suitable for your horse’s specific needs.
